Alan--

>>>Why does a suburban American buy an SUV rather than a minivan? I mean, if you are never off-road, then why the big gear?<<<

A SUV by itself isn't even the right gear for off road.

Most suburban morons who say they go "off road" don't really go "OFF ROAD." If they ever did and were smart they'd have a big honking winch hanging from the front of those SUVs.

But then that would ruin the "tasteful" look of the vehicle now wouldn't it?

By the way, last winter in my part of the country SUVs outnumbered regular cars in the ditch 2 to 1.

The other thing is the new SUVs are so loaded up and fancy I'd be afraid of banging it up and getting dirt, fish and animal guts all over it. -g-

Ice is partly right, people buy them because they look cool and it's keeping up with the Jones. But minivans are junk. My sister has had a few, and they just have zero power and fall apart, so you aren't saving anything in the long run. Plus you can't get one with a stick shift, and I won't drive anything without a stick.<edit> There's my personal taste intruding itself again.
