FBI, US Attorney's Office Have Emulex Hoax Suspect in Custody

Los Angeles, Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- The FBI and U.S. Attorney's office said they have a suspect in custody in the case of a fake news release that sent Emulex shares tumbling Friday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and FBI have scheduled a joint news conference in Los Angeles at 11 a.m. local time, said FBI spokesman Matt McLaughlin. The FBI said the suspect is a male and gave no further detail.

The FBI's computer-crime squad, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market have investigated the bogus release. The hoax started with an e-mail sent late last Thursday to Internet Wire, a Los Angeles-based public relations firm, which later was picked up by news organizations.

Costa Mesa, California-based Emulex shares rose 2 1/2 to 103 in late morning trading.

FBI Makes Arrest in Emulex Hoax Case

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested an individual on Thursday morning related to the Emulex Corp. hoax, in which a false press release crashed the data networking equipment maker's stock last week, two FBI sources said.

``It's one person,'' said one source. ``We made the arrest at 7 am (PDT) this morning.''

The arrest was confirmed by a second source.

CNBC just reported the EMLX hoaxster was a former employee of InternetWire! One must now wonder about the ethics of other employees of wire services given their exposure to news prior to its release to the general public.
