Chic,

You can't have it both ways. If you take the Rambus bandwidth numbers seriously, it's clear the P4 is in serious trouble and is one SLOW processor clock-for-clock compared to the Athlon.

The problem for Intel and Rambus is far more serious than that. The benchmarks indicate two things:

1. DRAM bandwidth on Willy is very high!

2. High DRAM bandwidth is meaningless for most applications. (Even with high DRAM bandwidth available, the benchmarks were terrible.)

Dear Chic hearne: I admit I have certainly been confused lately. I am buying a new computer this fall, originally planned in Sept. but with all the new stuff coming out I thought I would postpone it a couple of months and see if I can get next years technology now. I was truly excited about the p4 as first change in 6 years and thought it would get me into the future, then the problems developed. So I am just watching and waiting. JDN
