Is it saying 1.5 Ghz Mustang in Q2 or "2" month (Feb)?" If Palomino has 512K L2 cache I would expect AMD to do some kind of shrink because a 512K L2 Thunderbird would be something like 140 sq mm or so and that would probably run too hot for notebooks, even if Mustang's core is condensed more with the same process. Scumbria, would an extra 256K L2 cache even help the Athlon in notebooks? I think you will say it won't help in normal business apps which are usually run on notebooks. My WAG is Palomino has 256K L2 cache, not 512K, unless the AMD does a process shrink to .15 or so. Last I checked, AMD's FAQ said Mustang would be made on a .18 process, but I checked out again and I think the wording has changed - "“Mustang” Enhanced version of AMD Athlon™ processor with reduced core size, lower power requirements, and up to 1MB of on-chip, performance-enhancing L2 cache memory. Expected to be manufactured on a 0.18 micron copper process technology. Multiple derivatives of the Mustang core are planned to address the requirements of the high-performance server/workstation, value/performance desktop and mobile markets. “Palomino” Enhanced version of AMD Athlon processor based on “Mustang” core with reduced core size, lower power requirements and support for mobile features. Will represent the first AMD Athlon mobile offering. Expected to be manufactured on a 0.18 micron copper process technology. “Morgan” Future version of AMD Duron processor core with reduced core voltage, lower power requirements, and support for mobile features. Will be manufactured on a 0.18 micron process technology. Planned to address the requirements of the value market."www1.amd.com So Morgan will be made in Austin while Mustang and Palomino will be made in Dresden and are "expected" to be made on a .18 process. I bet AMD is very careful of their wording in these FAQs, so I am sure they know what they wrote. Paul says he thinks Mustang will use a .18/.13 combo kinda like the Athlon used a .25/.18 combo last year.
