In an indication that a depressed agricultural economy is reaching beyond the farm, Farmland Industries Inc. has warned bond investors that it expects a large loss for the fourth quarter and its fiscal year that ended Thursday.

The biggest drag on Farmland earnings is the high cost of natural gas, which makes up about 85 percent of the cost of making fertilizer, Roberts said. Natural gas prices have been going up dramatically for months and are running double from a year ago. Fertilizer is one of Farmland's largest volume products.
