I don't think Gore's credibility is an issue. It his embellishment of accomplishments. He has many, which demonstrates that he is better prepared. Now, if it were John McCain, it would have been a different story.

Well, whether Gore's credibility is an issue or not, I don't think it should be over the "inventing the internet" statement. This is mere hyperbole - "1. obvious and intentional exaggeration. 2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally.". Al Gore literally inventing the internet is not something anyone would believe nor is it anything I can imagine him thinking someone would take literally.

I think one should be at least as distrustful of someone who misrepresents hyperbole as a lie as one should be of Gore himself.
