I'm not an expert on this, but I know Mani does thermal design for problems a lot worse than a Pentium 4. I suspect that Al fins were "good enough" and that the extra weight of all-Cu would have been a big problem.

Already the heat sink has to be supported by the case directly.

BTW, I'm typing this on my son's new Duron 650 system we put together today. An awfully lot faster than his old K6-2 450. Getting the ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro drivers to load properly was a problem. Man, that boxed processor heat sink clips onto the CPU with incredible pressure.

As for overclocking, it wouldn't even do 110 MHz bus, but maybe it was the memory. (early cheap PC100 128M stick)
