I have had very many dealings with commerical banks, and I worked for one for 10 years. Dishonest employees do exist (in very small numbers), but when found out they are quickly dismissed. Fraudulent conduct by banks is not pervasive. Banks have special training courses to make sure proper disclosures are made, and that steps are taken to avoid such things as money laundering. The closest banks come to disreputable behaviour lies in thier inability to admit mistakes and properly compensate for them. This appears to be what has happened in your case. But this is the exception, rather than the rule. Indeed, I heard of one case where a bank made an error and underpaid an account a very large sum -- a sum so large that it adversely impacted the P and L statement. They made good on the sum, and suffered the P&L embarrassment. Honest bankers do indeed go far. I know many in upper management of a major money center bank, and they are honest (with customers) at all times. I will grant you that most of them are politicians, so the manner in which they deal with internal employees can be less than scrupulous. This can be said of the senior managers of many organizations, banks and non-banks alike. I have many, many bad things to say about banks, but none of them deal with the issue of honesty. Most of my complaints center around their politics, lack of vision and creativity, and their resulting inability to provide new and useful products and services in a timely manner. I could tell you horror stories, which, given your opinion of banks in general, you would heartily enjoy. You are making the error of drawing conclusions about a group based on a bad experience with one member of that group. This is what is called "predjudice." I hope you can overcome it. I know many fine people who work for banks, and they do not deserve the low opinion you seem to have of them. Cordially, INTCfan
