Chic, If Intel pulls off a miracle and gets .13um copper shipping as Barrett states they will, I will be dumping my AMD. It's impossible.

If I'm not misinformed Intel is building currently one copper fab in Ireland which should be operational in Q2 2001. This is already an extremely tight schedule (building began only a few months ago). And they say that it will be operational at the same time, producing tons of P4s? Impossible. They probably are already testing copper processes in the lab but that's one thing -- production another.

But let's give Intel the benefit of the doubt and say they don't have any problems and have production volumes of copper P4s (and P3s) in Q3 2001. Even then they have only on fab available which is slowly ramping up. Real production volumes won't happen until Q4 2001 at the earliest with this schedule. And now imagine what will happen if there are any delays which are highly probable...

Either Barrett is very naive -- or he's lying to the public on purpose.

Chic RE...<<<<You're damn right I did !!! <<

Good call, but it just maybe that the P4's we are seeing now are doctored. IBM should have gotten some by now to test. Have you heard any buzz, like you heard with T-Bird?

Apparently, Intel is not as confident as you about copper...they will likely train .13u on Aluminum first.

chic,

If Intel pulls off a miracle and gets .13um copper shipping as Barrett states they will, I will be dumping my AMD.

I think there are more variables at play that will determine which company will gain ground at expense of the other than just timeliness of Intel copper process.

We need to consider how good the process is, what it will do to Intel's bin splits and yields.

We have to consider CPU design. We will have Sledgehammer vs. Itanium vs. Mustang vs. Foster etc. for desktop and notebook.

In addition to that, we have to consider that AMD is not standing still.

In Intel's favor, we have to consider that we have absolutely no idea about what;s going on in Intel test labs. Just because there is no production facility and parts in production, it doesn't mean that Intel is behind.
