On one hand, I refuse to believe that Intel would go ahead and launch Pentium 4 if it doesn't provide enough of a speed boost over the fastest Pentium III at the time.

In absence of competition from AMD, the high end chips would be Piii 733 through 866. They would be all functioning properly, available in sufficient quantities. Willy would launch at 1.2 to 1.4 GHz and would provide enough of a speed boost over Piii line.

On the other, Intel hasn't been executing properly as of late, so anything is possible, I guess.

Agreed, anything is possible. And I too expect much better performance from P4 than the benchmark results we have seen. Especially much better than what latest article in The Register published.

On the other hand, if The Register results are correct, I would advise all here to sell Intel stock.
