I was in D.C at the time finishing up my Graduate Studies. Boy was I incensed in some respects. Reagan had turned ketchup into a vegetable for needy children in regard to their school lunch program while he was funding "Star Wars." Moreover, a very good friend of mine (to this very day) had his father's social security benefits cut at the age of 23. He had been using this money since his father had passed away as a young boy for his college and graduate school education. When he had to get his papers in at the end of each term and had to quit his part time job, he basically starved and had to permanently move into a basement apartment which was (for all intensive purposes) a "rat trap" so he could afford to get his work done. If I didn't buy him some food, he probably would have died because he was losing weight rapidly and he was to proud to accept food stamps or welfare. Today, he is doing quite well. Ronald Reagan was as "moderate" as Ron Reece claims to be today! We all know how "moderate" you are, Ron, so cut the BS. Your not a very good politician. The "Moral Majority" initially came into being as a vehicle to get youngsters to obey "authority" so they would not question and rebel against the initiatives of government. The "Moral Majority" had very little to do with religion proper in its earliest stages of formation. It was primarily a weapon of the Far Right to control attitudes. Today, of course, many religious bigots who cannot take a step outside of their own self-proclaimed superior world of faith, are card carrying members of the "Moral Majority." The religious minorities in this country understand the intentions and spirit of the "Moral Majority" all to well. The choice of Joe Lieberman as Vice President was a brilliant strategic move by Gore. It's nice to open doors.... I'm sure you realize how that will affect voter turnout in November on behalf of the Democrats. Yes, Reagan did succeed in destroying the "evil Soviet empire." But he did so at the cost of rendering many middle class Americans obsolete. It must burn you, Ron, that the "liberal" Democratic party is now widely perceived as the party of Economic Growth and Prosperity. As you know, Perceptions are very hard to change. Bush is in way over his head here and he doesn't have the communicative tools to change perceptions. Gore will eat Bush alive in the debates IMO. I'm all for strengthening the military somewhat but not at the expense of the lower middle class American who is struggling, which is what Reagan did. I knew very little about the intricacies of finance in 1980 when Reagan got elected. But I understood that the massive tax cuts would eventually find their way into the stock market, pushing equities dramatically higher eventually. It was that insight that saved us. We put all our savings into a S@P mutual fund in the 1980's and early 90's and bought 2 homes(which are now completely paid off) with our profits.
