Vendor Financing - "Nortel is providing vendor financing as needed to boost new business. The company chooses what to finance based on strategic priorities at the time. In the past it has supported PCS build-out, select optical system sales, and CLEC growth. It is currently providing
selective financing for DLECs, ASPs, and UMTS applications. Nortel is experienced with vendor financing. Over the last five years, it has financed over $23 billion and then laid-off the debt with no recourse (mainly to large commercial banks)."

It is funny Barron's didn't mention anything about the vendors' successes when some of their clients payment in the form of equities turned into windfalls for them.

Bosco - Are you implying that the National Enquirer of the financial press would actually sensationalize a story by distorting the facts and/or by omitting relevant information?<g>

A vendor with a less than competitive product offering financing to a weak customer is a different case than a vendor who uses financing as a strategic weapon in conjunction with strong, competitive product portfolio. The market will sort out the differences in pretty short order.

Vendor financing has been common in the carrier industry for years. Routinely disclosing the details about it has been less common. It will be interesting to see if the Barrons article will put pressure on more companies to break out their vendor financing numbers.

Nortel brought up the subject of vendor financing in their last conference call and said something along the lines that it was well under control. I don't recall that any of the analysts asked questions about it. - peggylynn
