The trouble with the Larry King format is that you can't make a point, then explain your point with a couple examples. Larry asks short questions, then expects short answers in return. If you ramble on too much, then he asks another question right away. He had a guest on a while back (I can't remember who) who really jumped him for doing that. That's Larry's style. He keeps things moving. Rat-a-tat-tat. He's after ratings. He doesn't like lengthy answers. That style works when he's interviewing Jerry Lewis, but should not be a substitute for a dignified presidental debate established by the commission.

In that sense the discussion on both talk shows wouldn't be honest and open ... because the candidates would, in effect, have to give short "stock answers" to difficult questions.

You also ask why should Bush agree to Gore's terms if the format is not to his liking. These aren't "Gore's terms." They are the "people's terms." Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Dole all agreed to the debates. Why not GWB? Is he somehow different?
