I was just watching the '92 debates with Carol Simpson. C-Span's been replaying them. I forgot, but in that debate, members of the audience asked questions of the candidates. There were no Sam Donaldson types. Just solid citizens. Actually, Bush Sr. did quite well in that format, I thought. Clinton was the one that looked a little green. Some of the stuff was humorous, like Clinton talking about bringing dignity to the office of president.
