Douglas, it's not a question of left or right wing politics. I'm talking about a militant ultra-right pro-apartheid missionary group. These guys are fuelling the war in Sudan! The Sudan People's Liberation Army is the only obstacle on the road to peace. Yes, the rebels are blocking peace in Sudan, not the government. Rebel leader John Garang blocks peace, not President Omar al-Bashir. Who says? Answer: John Garang's former ally and Sudan's former Prime Minister, Sadeq al-Mahdi (it was thanks to al-Mahdi that Garang came to be recognised as a valid interlocutor by all the political forces in the north). The present government in Khartoum came to power in 1989 in a coup against the then ruler Sadeq al-Mahdi. Mahdi now calls for confrontation with the SPLA, saying all other political groups are ready for a comprehensive peace. There is no doubt that Al-Mahdi is better placed than any other party to resolve the crisis in Sudan and avert its partitioning.
