>> CHINA UNICOM PLANS CDMA NETWORK

RDSL
04 September 2000

China Unicom, China's mobile phone and fixed-line service provider, plans to set up China's only CDMA cellular network. The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has yet to decide whether to allow Unicom to operate a CDMA network on the CDMAIS-95 second-generation narrowband standard or the new CDMA2000 technology of Qualcomm of the United States. It is likely that the government will approve the CDMAIS-95 standard while negotiations continue on patent rights for the CDMA2000 technology. <<
