I'm the same age and I remember interest rates being favorable after the early Reagan years, through the Bush years and into this decade. Of course by comparison, the 21% Carter left us with probably was a nadir and although I don;t recall specifics, rates in the 90's may have been better than the eighties. I mainly chalk up the good interest rates to excellent management by the Fed and a lot of productive work by Americans everywhere. JLA

I wasn't backtracking, e- Bill knew I meant that the trend had begun sometime in the 80s. The recession had to wring inflation out of the economy first. It is such a well- known story that it did not occur to me anyone would misunderstand.......
