I wonder if anyone in MU management is looking back on how things have turned out. It would have been so easy for MU to make an early commitment to DRDRAM and probably get a free pass on the whole DDR and SDRAM problem.

If MU is right in that DRDRAM flops, they slide along scot free. If MU is wrong, they would have had to pay the bulldog anyway.

Instead, they dig in their heels in typical MU fashion.

Tenchusatsu,

This is the kind of favoritism that makes anti-Rambus parties like Micron cry, "Anti-trust violation!"

You don't need to take cash in return for your IP -- you need a "balanced benefit" (my phrase) in the deal. You can take sincere marketing efforts, exclusivity, etc. in place of cash. It's not favoritism.

If Micron offered to push RDRAM as strongly as Intel and become a truly strong advocate of RDRAM, I'll bet that Rambus would give them the licenses almost for free (the key is obviously to have real, measurable milestones in place to ensure that it's not just lip-service). But Rambus could make a strong case to follow-on licensees that the PR value of their signing is significantly less than Micron's.

Dave

Ten

Intel has risked billions on the RDRAM and they deserve to get a special deal. Nothing wrong with consideration for consideration.

Anti-Rambus parties like the known universe beyond Intel and Rambus? Like everybody who isn't very well disposed toward the "money for nothing" concept? Not to mention that there are a number of Intel engineers on SI who don't think much of Rambus, but I'm sure you know more than they do.

I know, Rambus is too good for the rest of us.
