Sure would beat polishing off sapphire <g>.

The Ploogies say theirs was provided by Crystal Photonics, about which I could find nothing. These all seem to be low-key operations; I don't get the feeling that demand for these substrates is skyrocketing. AXT's expertise is in III-V compound substrates, so I doubt if they're looking at it.

I wonder if lithium aluminate can be formed by combining dilithium crystals with transparent aluminum? Not that I have any...

They distinguish between spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric polarization as two mechanisms that must both be addressed. The former is eliminated due to non-polarizability of the crystal in the [1100] direction, and they claim that the latter is eliminated in their structure because there's no shear stress in the growth plane.
