P4 held hostage.

It looks like the P4 is going to be the first loser in the war between Rambus and the DRAM FABs.

They memory makers all seem to be walking away from RDRAM (except Samsung) so Samsung will produce no more than they are absolutely sure will sell at a premium - taking zero risk of overproduction, since they have no market share worries. P4 is limited to the smallest volume in Samsung's worst case scenario.

Meanwhile everybody else is selling SDRAM and DDR at a little over cost, and that cost is low due to economies of scale.

So until P4 gets some SDRAM or DDR chipset support, it is at a major price disadvantage and capped in potential sales - no matter how well production goes. And with the various production snafus Intel has experienced over the last year, Samsung won't be expecting much, so Intel can't very well go all out anyway. Samsung cuts back so Intel cuts back so Samsung cuts back.... It's a vicious circle leading to a marginal rollout, at best.

Dan

RE: "It appears that Jerry is selling out the 'droids equity for some extra cash. They don't seem to mind."

Hi John,

Assuming the target market is strong, which I believe it is, raising capital has the potential to accelerate growth and returns (of course, this assumes the money is applied appropriately).

How will the money be used? How much are they seeking to raise and for what purposes?

For fabs?

Amy J

They don't seem to mind."

Why should they - Jerry has made a profit in 3 quarters straight.
