I think you are generally mis-informed on this issue AJ.
Re: DELL on the other hand, buys their Notebooks
that DELL only combines and burns in, from another company
...

Dell designs > 70% of their portables in-house from
the ground up. Most if not all of the entire
Lattitude line targeted for the corporate customer
are done this way. Only a few low end products
within the Inspiron line are OEM'd from outside
companies.

Beyond portables, Dell designs all Optiplex, PowerEdge
and Precision systems in-house, motherboards/chassis/PS et. al. Only Dimension is heavily OEM'd.

Dell cranks out a significant number of products, and
more per R&D dollar than any of their competitors.
