Because it has been perverted to a scheme to overly enrich employees at the expense of general shareholders. But the continuing bull market hides this and shareholders just shrug if the stock is higher than when they bought it.

I don't think there are all that many people up in arms about it, otherwise the greatest abusers would be getting their stock price crushed.

I do expect this to change one day, though. Who the heck knows when. -g-

Ice: Cash is very important. But you are right too. As an investor, we need to see gradual increase in share price not decrease.
Earnings growth shows how much the management can make and leave it for the shareholders.
A lot of people don't see the two facets of earnings. It is not enough to make the money, it is what you keep it with shareholders is what counts as earnings.
Another qs.: Does the taxation laws require that beyond certain retained earnings, the company has to distribute profits?
