General V-

i understand and respect your position as well. (i like your poetry too dude). i guess i'm quite fortunate in the stress department. i've been tossed by much heartier storms, almost totally demolished several times. through experience, i've learned that the stress itself was a factor of my own resistance to "what is" and can be eliminated by letting go of resistance.

here's an exercise you might try. this is going to sound far fetched and impractical but if you start to do it, just as a trial, you might find that it makes your life a little more pleasant. if you make your life more pleasant, it adds to the collective pleasantness in the world and it helps me too...

when you get an unpleasant post from someone in, oh i don't know, shall we say texas? rewrite the post in your mind as you read it - most people need editing help anyway so they'll be glad you did the rewrite for them (i might be lying here but i could be right - either way it doesn't really matter because the goal is just to increase collective pleasantness anyway). here's how it works...

someone once wrote, in reference to me, as having, or being a "fat ass". at face value that would usually be considered an insult. whether true or not this did not tend to stir pleasantness in my psyche. so i rewrote it. now i could have rewritten it to be more truthful and changed it to "fat belly" but still that would not increase my pleasantness much and since the purpose of the original phrase was not so much to convey truth anyway i figured it would not hurt the author's story much to keep the embellishment and the noun, "ass" but to change the actual adjective to "cute". this then, did indeed tend to stir a slight pleasantness and increased self esteem in my psyche.

if you're not confident of your editing prowess and would like some help in this regard i'd be glad to offer my help until you get the hang of it. you can refer me to the unpleasant pile of words and i'll do my best at transforming them into a pile of words that will increase your pleasure in this sweet old world.

thank you for being the icon that got the ball rolling here and drew so many good people together to exchange ideas in this forum. you know that it is bigger than "you" now. the collective view and demeanor is no longer always going to be a refection of your values. do not feel that you must take responsibility for all that is written on this thread or that you are responsible for the well being of all who lurk or post here. decency is yours to give, you give much to all and that is enough. you need not feel that anyone expects you to control it in others. that's not your job nor is it anyone's job here. your own decency stands as a fine example to me and all your friends. (your opinions about other's decency and motives are always welcome ideas.) i thank you greatly.

respectfully,

yer fren - dusty

porch decorum

due to the upheaval in the porch decorum lately, i have
pretty much gone into lurker mode until i could get a
better understanding of the direction the porch was going.
i find the recent events fascinating, disturbing and
necessary for the progress and development of this
community of wonderful people. i am bothered by the tone
set by some of the "porch elders", however, as to the purpose
of the porch. the porch has come to be a gathering place of
a variety of personalities and tastes, which up until the
last week, seemed to work. the porch may have started as
a gathering place for "friends of voltaires", but i
believe it has evolved beyond that and is a gathering
place for a community inspired by pluralism, diversity
and a common interest in investing. i would like to see
the porch continue in that direction. that is what
inspired me to join and i'm sure has been a drawing factor
for many others too. (becoming a friend of tom's has just been
an added blessing) as much as i highly regard free speech
and 1st amendment rights, i find that community standards
and democracy in their enforcement to be just as important.
however i also believe in the right of those standards to
be challenged and tested periodically which builds a solid
foundation for the community and is one of the great
principles that founded this wonderful country i am so
greatful to be living in. however, as much as i bristle at the
thought of a moderated thread, i now believe that it has
become apparent that in order to keep the greater community
intact, it is necessary. i would like to propose a solution
that may be in the best interest of the community. i would
like to see a committee elected by the porcher's for the
purpose of moderating the thread. i think a group of 5 to 7
individuals would be good. when someone presents a problem
on the thread the offended poster would openly post a complaint to the
committee and community. the complaint would try to be resolved
by mediation (PM) and if that didn't work the committee would
formally present, upon agreement, a warning to that poster.
if the poster continued their actions the committee would
consult by PM and decide whether or not to allow the poster to
remain on the thread. if the decision is to terminate the
poster, the commitee would then notify Uncle Frank to terminate
them. i think this would eliminate a lot of the gestapo
element to the moderated thread. it would also give the
community a voice and action without having to engage the
offender, continuing the abuse and board glut. if you all
agree with me on this i would like to nominate some people
here to the committee. these are people i feel would give fair
and thoughtful consideration to their decisions.

i really love this thread and hate to see it splintered over
the actions of any one detractor. i am hoping that we can mend
any damage and continue on in the spirit this board was intended.
i look forward to many years of welcoming new posters, sharing
our lives and interests and many more porch parties. if i
haven't told you lately...i love you all! she

p.s. to dealer...you are not on the list for nepotistic reasons
not personal. you are welcome to arm wrestle your brother for
the position however :-)
