saukriver,

Re: Palm v. Pocket PC - Handheld Game

<< end-user pricing on the PocketPC >>

Differential seems to be about $125 to $150, apples to apples, although no question Pocket PC's need more RAM.

Palm IIIe is about $140 and the PalmVx & PalmIIIc are about $400, With some necessary software, keyboard, cables, etc, My Palm Vx investment is close to $800.

By comparison the Compaq Aero 1550 is $275 and the Casio Cassiopeia E-100 (16MB with color) is $490. The new Casio EM-500 Pocket PC Navy is $489.

Depending on intended use their is often a bit more software bundled with the Pocket PC's and some extra features, ports, et al.

... and then you get into the keyboard models, for those that want to substitute a handheld for a laptop. In my case I supplement laptop use with the Palm. I always carry the Palm. I only carry a laptop when I need it for presentations.

IMO, the PalmIIIc is the Palm to buy. It was released a month after my Vx purchase. I can live without a color display for colors sake, but their is much better contrast for tired old eyes on the IIIc.

Also the V & Vx introduced a new serial connector. There are a lot more accessories for the connector on the III series.

BTW: when I was shopping handhelds I was really impressed with Psion models and particularly the Series 5 which was not then available in the states. A CDMA modem was supposed to be forthcoming. I saw it used at Heathrow with a GSM phone as modem. At 2 pounds it was a pretty hefty handheld but price point of $1000 was darn good. The new Revo Plus on the lighter side is pretty well rated.
