PC Sales in Third Week of August Rise Significantly Thanks to Holidays
September 11, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales in the third week of August 2000 (Aug. 14-20) showed a large increase in both volume and value.

Sales increased by 18.7 percent on a unit basis and by 18.3 percent on a value basis compared to the previous week. This result was obtained from the POS data collected by GfK Japan Ltd., which handles surveys on 3,200 large electric home appliance retail stores in Japan.

It was since the fourth week of May that the week-on-week growth rate exceeded the 15 percent mark in terms of unit-based sales. PC sales were brisk in August, resulting from summer holidays many Japanese companies observed in the third week. Those on holiday are believed to have visited retail shops.

PC sales, compared with the same week last year (Aug. 16-22, 1999), increased by 82.8 percent in units and also increased by 56.5 percent in value. This is because last year the summer holiday week fell one week earlier than this year.

The average retail price for PCs fell to 188,165 yen, down 589 yen from 188,754 yen a week before. (105.07 yen = US$1)
