Microsoft, Ericsson Team Up

SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) and Ericsson officially launched a new joint venture Monday that will have e-mail and Internet services for mobile phones by the end of the year.

The new company, Ericsson Microsoft Mobile Venture AB, is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, where 70 percent-owner Ericsson is also based. Ulf Avrin was named president of the venture.

By the end of the year, the joint company will produce services that will tie people's cell phones to their corporate e-mail accounts and computer networks, giving them access to their work from nearly anywhere.

Ericsson Microsoft's software will also include calendars, to-do lists and other personal organization functions, the two companies said.

The joint venture is part of a broader strategic alliance that is also expected to produce the next generation of so-called ``smart'' phones, which are expected to provide better access to the Internet.

Brian - this seems a little bizarre - There are some murmurs that the 44-year-old Ayala could be the next in line to Steve Ballmer, who was just made chief executive in January...

Let's see, that would mean that Maritz, Raikes, Muglia, Allchin, and probably several others that I can't think of at the moment all take their hats out of the ring. And that Ballmer has any interest in stepping down...
