Yesterday afternoon, I posted I was buying EFCX. . .around $8 bucks. Today it is at $11 3/8ths. I also bought PLUG, BLDP an MKTY. . . though at todays levels, there is additional associated trading risk. Not buying FCEL, CPST, HPOW or other "me too" recent IPOs. . .I just haven't had the time to do the DD that it takes to determine which are the real thing and which are overinflated shell IPOs that were launched for the primary purpose of selling stock. Gotta poke around at their revenue stream and product lines. . .stick a pin in them and see what happens. So I stay with what I know. . . PLUG is the mother of fuel cells for the home. . .making them for General Electric, which will sell them through local utilities. BLDP is the leader in automotive fuel cells. I just saw an article about a Mercedes A class with a fuel cell driven power train. 90 mph and 280 mile range. I'm waiting for the Hybrid electric version. . . THAT would be cool. I like both PLUG and BLDP best for long-term holds. . .hopefully from where we originally bought them. EFCX makes tiny fuel cells. . .for cell phones, etc. Haven't seen them yet. . .but I guess the technology is fine. MKTY is the sleeper of the lot. They launched PLUG, which is why their stock tracks PLUG so closely. They also own large chunks of other fuel cell makers. . . and have an incubator ready to spin-off a half dozen more. This is rapidly becoming the CMGI of the fuel cell biz. But they have no competition the way CMGI does. MKTY has always been a good trader off about 10 bucks. If I'm not mistaken, its investment in fuel cell makers is worth close to their market cap. . . and as PLUG rises, MKTY's equity rises in proportion. . making them quite undervalued whenever PLUG is on a tear. I'd appreciate anyone with actual data on this to post here for us. HPOW has become a momo today. 7 million share float with 1.35 mil traded by 10:45am. . . currently up about 15%. This could be a good daytrade/scalp today as it has the wildest activity. Why Fuel cells? High oil prices are the catalyst for todays move. But the energy crises in California this summer should be what takes these companies from the high-tech and places them into the mainstream. San Diego had the most difficulty with energy this summer. . . the city is trying to adopt a new image of being the Broadband Center of America. . .I forget the phrase they are tossing around. But you can't be a service provider with energy problems. . . .or can you? Commercial fuel cells could be used as primary power for data services, web hosts and other information centers. It is far cleaner power and, unlike most electric companies, delivers a steady stream of even voltage. . . Just perfect for ultra high-speed data delivery. So do not misunderstand what is happening. Fuel Cells are not a fad. . . any more than the internet is a fad. Rande Is
