<< If this is true it is very significant in my opinion ... "Bellsouth sees CDMA for Latin America" (by Lynette Luna) >>

If (big) ...

Last October, Lynette Luna wrote (a well researched) article for RCR News with the splashy title "AT&T explores 1XRTT technology" in about 92 point type. In much smaller type was the subtitle: "Carrier says for competitive intelligence":

cdg.org

As well researched as the article might have been the subtitle was accurate.

BTW: Back in 1995 RCR News wrote at least one article while A&B block was in progress, opining that AT&T would choose CDMA for it's 1900 MHz digital technology choice. The article was written just shortly before AT&T made it's widely anticipated IS-136 choice in July of 1995.

Now Bell South (in Latin America) is a little different than AT&T (here) I will admit.

For one thing they are a CDMA carrier in Latin America (GSM here and in Europe, & TDMA here and in LA). For another they are not the primary driver of the TDMA-EDGE standard (that's AT&T), and to the best of my knowledge they have (unlike AT&T) let no TDMA-EDGE contracts.

Now one might state thhat where there is smoke there is fire but I am mucho leery of articles that state:

"considering a technology flip"

"Sources close to BellSouth say"

"A BellSouth spokesman declined to comment"

"Other sources close to the company say BellSouth has made the decision"

"Sources say"

It would be nice ... heck it would be FANTASTIC ... but call me a skeptic, I'm not taking it to the bank.

This article has already led to some conjecture on the wireless threads here that after LA, Bell South would of course migrate to CDMA here, and of course that in turn leads to speculation that AT&T will abandon EDGE. All this becomes more and more of a stretch.

Now Bell South is the only carrier I know of that currently has 3 2G digital teechnologies and CDPD data (how is that for diversity?), and they are also implementing a 2.5G technology (GPRS). They already deploy CDMA so they can compare IS-95A against GSM & IS-136 TDMA, and probably have a very fair understanding of what it will take to overhaul an ANSI-41 TDMA net.

I'm guessing that Bell South is exploring this, either for competitive evaluation purposes, or because they want to consolidate to a single standard in LA (and it might not be TDMA). If they are exploring this, it could easily lead to "Sources say".conjecture.

The dynamics get pretty intricate. Bell South is involved in merger talks with SBC (also GSM, TDMA, CDPD). NTT DoCoMo is looking to take a share of the combined entity. SBC is announcing Internet services.

I LOVE wireless. A rumor a day (ROD). Twists, Turns, & Technologies (TTT). Keeps the yenteh's occupied.

If the above article was written with this type of prose, about Sprint PCS considering WCDMA, cries of FUD would be echoing all over Go2Net

Now if Lynette is not only in the right church this time, but also in the right pew for once, I will call her a seer, and toast her all over CyberSpace.

As has been pointed out on the "Buying Range" thread, there is no link to the source of the article and the typos seem to indicate it was either typed or something worse. It is an important article. I hope it true. But where did it originally come from?

Other sources close to the company say BllSouth

TDMA & GSM technology have the same migration plan to EDGE, but major carriers in Europe haven't publicly voiced their interest in deploying the technology at this point. If the majority of Euroopean carriers don't choose the technology, analysts say TDMA operators will lose the global economies of scale they are seeking.
