In a survey yesterday, Trevor Greetham, global strategist at Merrill Lynch, adds an intriguing comment on the relationship between oil stocks and the "new economy" or the theory that markets are now seeing a "new era".

"It could be argued that Opec is testing the new era. If it proves true, central banks would not need to raise interest rates further, higher oil prices would be sustainable, and oil stocks would become new era plays. If not, inflation will rise."
