charging for beta is a great idea.
and if you're an investor in AAPL, I would think you'd be all for it.
pressing the actual CD doesn't cost much, but put in all the S&H, etc. and it actually costs real $'s.
i didn't see anywhere in the PR about it being available via download... but my guess is it's too cumbersome to be downloadable... i mean, it is an OS after all, not an app :-)

to maintain their bottom line, it makes sense for Apple to charge what is necessary to at least cover their costs.

my guess is the beta is pretty solid and rivals other OS's FCS release. heck, I'm thinking about buying one... and I don't even own a Mac <VBG>

I also think charging for this Beta makes great sense. Being a Beta of a complex product, MacOS X Beta may not be for everybody yet.
If it were free, too many users may try, even those too casual users who may end up being disappointed for expecting too much out of it. These people would end up giving bad press for Apple.
By paying for it (a modest sum actually), only the users that are serious about giving it try will actually try.
Now, I agree that what one pays for the Beta should go against payment for the final version (or in other words, Beta users should be able to upgrade to the commercial version).

In the meantime, as an investor, I am not unhappy to see Apple generate revenue from this Beta!

I am still trying to order my copy of MacOS X (server always busy) and I can't wait to try it out!

My $29.99 on this matter...

Other points taken, but IMHO,
methinks Apple is learning from the dark side.
After all, Darth , eh, MSFT charges $69.99 (and more!) for their beta software! :-)

But seriously, I think that the cost is too high. It should be: $4.95
which would would separate the serious mice from the frivolous trackballs,
this price probably cover expenses (plus, "beta" means that
someone is doing something for them, testing the software for them for free...)

(and if it doesn't cover expenses, poor multi-billion dollar Apple will take such a big hit, sob sob)

AND aha! Now, my main point, am I wrong on this?

doesn't this beta software come with an expiration date???

hmmmm.............

Of course, for $29.99, not only can you preview the latest and greatest from Apple,
you'll get a souvenir CD (to frame and hang on your wall!) which
will represent the inflection point in computing and will become
a valuable and sought-after historical antique 20 years from now!! (heh heh) :-)

<<Maybe they just don't want many Beta guinea pigs... >>

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think apple wants everybody trying this new system and dealing with a ton of problems from people screwing up their machines. That would have to explain the pricing otherwise I would have expected something at less than 20 dollars per unit.

<< Like the mouse at what? about $70. I looked at it and it's not worth $70. Not even close.>>

I have to disagree with you here. I like the new mouse and think it is very elegant and worth the bucks. JMO though.

Neal

The Apple mouse not worth its price? You're kidding right?
Apple is not supposed to sell the plastic in the mouse at cost. You've got to pay for the design too! And this is the most innovative mouse ever!
If you think you're paying too much, you just need to buy another mouse because you just don't see the benefits of this mouse. I would have bought this mouse even at twice the price Apple asks for because!
