TORONTO, Sept. 14 /CNW/ - Mobile Computing Corporation (MCC) (TSE:MBL), a
supplier of wireless information solutions for mobile workers, announced today
the launch of m-Xpander, a Microsoft Windows CE port expander for adding
multiple peripheral devices to enable complete mobile data enterprise
solutions. Through this product offering MCC solves the "one-port problem",
commonly associated with PDAs. The m-Xpander also permits in-vehicle Windows
CE PDAs to become wireless by integrating radio modems with it.
There are a total of six serial ports on the m-Xpander unit which permit
simultaneous connection of a PDA and numerous peripheral devices. These m-
Xpander ports are seen as standard ports (COM1, COM2, etc.) to a Windows CE
PDA or on-board computer. Typical devices that the mobile worker can operate
with the unit include printers, scanners, GPS receivers and wireless modems.
Additionally, the m-Xpander can house up to two wireless modems using internal
serial port connections and has other digital inputs and outputs for use of
various switches and indicators as the mobile application may require. MCC has
designed this product for the rugged in-vehicle mobile work environment and
incorporates its own microprocessor to manage the attached peripherals. The
m- Xpander is approximately 7 inches long by 4 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches
high.
"Mobile workers using onboard computers and PDAs frequently require the
use in the vehicle of more serial ports and wireless capabilities than are
typically available. Enterprise users need seamless access to printers,
scanners, modems and many other devices," said David Cunningham, President and
CEO of MCC. "The CE version of the m-Xpander should significantly increase our
market opportunities. We feel that the major hand held OEMs should now be very
interested in the m-Xpander's ability to position their products as being
wireless in-vehicle devices to the enterprise market."
The m-Xpander is available in October for distribution. MCC intends to
offer the m-Xpander through both value-added reseller and OEM channels.
m-Xpander is the second product released from MCC's emerging suite of
wireless data enterprise solutions utilizing the MCC Next Generation
architecture. These applications are based on Microsoft Windows CE/2000
platforms and are open, modular and scalable. MCC recently announced m-Mail, a
new wireless e-mail application designed specifically for enterprises with a
mobile workforce.
