VIRATA RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES IN THE COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY

Virata Receives Comet Award for Demonstrating Superior Achievement in the DSL Technology Industry

Santa Clara, CA - September 5, 2000 - Virata® Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTA), a leading semiconductor
supplier for broadband communications, today announced that it has received the Comet award from
Communication Systems Design magazine. The Comet awards recognize growing communications
technology companies that have demonstrated superior achievement through their technical vision and
innovation.

"We are very honored to be recognized by a panel of industry experts through the Comet awards," said
Duncan Greatwood, vice president of marketing at Virata. "It substantiates our belief that we offer the
industry's most highly integrated semiconductors and communications software to help DSL equipment
manufacturers efficiently bring products to market quickly and cost-effectively. As the communications
industry continues to expand, we will be there to provide the right tools and resources necessary to help
our customers succeed."

The Comet awards winners were selected by a panel of editors from three industry publications:
Communication Systems Design, Embedded Systems Programming and EE Times. In addition to being
prominently featured in the September issue of Communication Systems Design, the winners will be
presented with an award at an awards dinner to be held in their honor in October.

"Virata has made significant steps in delivering innovative technology into the hands of broadband
equipment suppliers,"
said Robert Keenan, editor-in-chief of Communication Systems Design. "The panel
evaluated a number of companies in the semiconductor and communications software market, and Virata
stood out as a leader in advancing the technology that impacts the future of DSL and wireless applications.
We believe Virata is on the fast-track to success in the evolving communications industry.

Gotta love Virata,
Michael
