That's true enough, Doug, but it's not clear if Intel's spec compiler ever gets used for production code, or anything other than getting good spec numbers.

Tomorrow's software will be optimized for the p4, and if the optimizations make it clock for clock faster, then it is a huge success.


The tomorrow you're talking about will also be the day of the k8, which, as you know, will be SSE implemented. The chip to replace is the PIII, and the software in which it must perform better are the 2001 one's. I would be surprised to see spread SSE2 support in new software before mid 2002. Software roadmaps are not as aggressive as semi maker's ones.
