So the net effect is that the optimizations will be made where it helps, which means to me, that complaining about p4 using optimized code is foolish, since that's what we'll see in the real world.

I guess the difference may be a benchmark optimized for the p4 using a video card optimized for the p4 won't be as telling a story as a benchmark non optimized for the p4 using a video card that is optimized for the p4. (at least if you're doing 3d gaming), but the fact that the quake 3 engine uses SSE is pretty significant imo. Unless someone is unseating ID as THE game developer.
