NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 2000--Who needs retail?

Dell (Nasdaq:DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems company and a premier provider of products and services for the Internet, today is shipping its 10 millionth Dimension desktop personal computer.

Most of those systems have been sold in the past three years as Dell aggressively targeted consumers worldwide. And because of Dell's direct one-on-one relationship with customers, the company knows who initially purchased each and every Dimension product. Lee Max of San Jose, Calif., who had previously bought two PCs from Dell, purchased the 10 millionth Dimension from Dell for his daughter to use at college this fall (configuration and price available separately).

"The PC has been and will continue to be the center of our customers' technology experience especially as they venture onto the Internet," said John Hamlin, vice president of Dell's consumer business. "We look forward to millions more customers discovering the ease of doing business with Dell in the years ahead."

Dell, which first focused on the consumer market in 1997, leveraged its direct model with individual consumers the same way it sold to business customers and became the No. 1 PC manufacturer in the U.S. And the strategy is working. According to Media Metrix, Dell's consumer business has grown faster than any PC maker in the nation.

"Dell has clearly benefited from having such close one-on-one relationships with our customers," said Hamlin.

Dimension, introduced in 1991, is also sold to small-business customers worldwide.

"Whether used in the home or office, Dell customers worldwide recognize the great deal they are getting when choosing a Dimension," said Ron Van Dell, general manager for Dell's Dimension product unit. "With Dimension offering the latest technology along with lifetime technical support, Dell has created a winning combination second to none in the industry."

Growth in Nashville

To help meet demand for personal desktop computers, Dell opened the Nashville manufacturing plant last year and has shipped more than 2 million Dimensions here. The Nashville plant is expected to ship its 3 millionth Dimension soon.

"Nashville's build-to-order manufacturing process has been a shining star for Dell," says Roy Perry, vice president of manufacturing for Dell's Dimension line. "We are continuously working every day to bring efficiencies to the model to deliver the best customer experience in the industry."
