mr. m; having a problem with 98 OS & wonder if you have any suggestions, as I noticed your excellent post on the shutdown problem.

When I first got the computer (May '99, P3-500, 256 megs RAM), I noticed how zippily the pages scrolled on my browser.

It may have been happening gradually, but now they just crawl & you can see the text changing in waves of effort.
As I'm running 2 computers, I did a test scrolling identical pages. The creaky old Aptiva P2-225 was much faster, no waves.

So I called the place that assembled the P3 for me. The tech said it was likely due to updating to the newest Internet Explorer browser & I should update the drivers for my (4) ATI video cards. So i did that, which also involved an update for the Norton anti-virus. Absolutely no improvement. BTW I also had installed the new IE on the Aptiva, which was unaffected. Both computers are running Win 98, but not quite identical versions because the Aptiva was an update.

Any comments would be appreciated. It's driving me crazy :)

MM,

I thought I read on this thread somewhere that you could defragment a formatted drive before an operating system is installed. Obviously this would probably be some kind of DOS utility that would be on a floppy disk. I thought my hard disks might be fragmented from all the partitions I have created, deleted, and created again. I guess my question is, if I re-format my drive will it completely defragment my disk?

Thanks.
