Dear nihil: punitive taxation for petroleum just as the Europeans and Japanese have
With your attitude I suspect you will support GORE as that is EXACTLY what he says he intends to do in his book. Personally, I enjoy my Jeeps and have no desire to drive one of those rice burners. JDN

Hi Hugh,
RE:"I believe we should have adopted punitive taxation for petroleum just as the Europeans and Japanese have. We can always do with some peppy demonstrations. The proceeds should have been invested in massive stockpiling and reserving and petrooleum substitute R&D. There is little to be said on premature deployment of costly energy technology, but it hardly made sense to drain America first."

I believe that Gore really feels the same way you do. I'm surprised he doesn't come right out and say it before the election. He would win by a landslide. People should be told now that they will have to make due with less.

I totally agree on governemnt energy R&D. A lot of Pork could be trimmed to fund it. Certainly not a manipulation of the tax code.

What would happen if they punished oil consumption as you suggest is a massive slow down of our economy.
Oil prices would drop. Rather than then eliminate the punishment, the Governemnt would complain of a revenue shortfall due to less gasoline being sold. They would then complain they could never eliminate the tax and might even have to add some new taxes to cover what they have already spent.
A new President will be elected in 2004.

Jim
