And court documents show that the Rangers owners were planning to condemn the Mathes' land and other tracts six months before the ASFDA was created. In an Oct. 26, 1990, memo from Mike Reilly, an Arlington real estate broker and part owner of the Rangers, to Tom Schieffer, the president and general partner of the club, Reilly said of the Mathes property, "in this particular situation our first offer should be our final offer ... If this fails, we will probably have to initiate condemnation proceedings after the bond election passes. " Reilly's memo was written nearly three weeks before the Arlington city council called for a referendum on the sales tax proposal for the stadium and a full three months before the referendum went before voters.<<< So the Ranger owners had no plan to bargain fairly, offer/counter offer--only a plan to make ONE offer then rely on condemnation--well, well in advance of the crucial sales tax referendum. Putting the cart before the horse, no? This is where the allegation that they "conspired" to take the land originates. It gets better: >>>In his memo, Reilly also suggested that Schieffer should inform Arlington city officials that the "Rangers want the city to establish development standards ... that you can have input on. By doing this, no one within a certain radius of the ballpark development could get a plat or building permit approval without the city's approval. The development standards established by ordinance would give you a tremendous amount of 'quiet' control over the land parcels you do not own in this area." On Nov. 7, Reilly wrote another memo to Schieffer regarding the Mathes property, saying he had spoken to Jane Mathes Kelton, and that "I believe the City will have to condemn her land." He also advised Schieffer to tell Bob Bennett, the president of the neighboring amusement park, Six Flags Over Texas, that the Rangers "plan to condemn this land so he will not waste his time" talking with the Mathes family about buying the property. The Mathes' land sat next to land owned by Six Flags and family members had spoken to Six Flags officials about acquiring their property for use in the amusement park. When asked about the memos in 1997 by the Texas Observer, Schieffer said, "Mike Reilly is not the Rangers. Reilly was a person we were using to try to option up land. Whatever Mike Reilly's thoughts or opinions were not necessarily the opinions of the Rangers." Oh. So that's how it works. Reilly was working for Bush, Schieffer and the other owners of the Rangers. But when a subpoena turned up embarrassing documents, then suddenly, Reilly wasn't speaking for the Rangers? <<< This is the man you want for President?>>>Although Bush's name is not on the Reilly memo,[Bush WAS managing general partner at the time] the man-who-would-be-president has made a gigantic profit by manipulating a system in which "a governing elite" used their power to take land from others. Bush, the man who said he would do everything he could to "defend the power of private property and private property rights" made $15 million by abusing the rights of others.<<< He pledges to defend private property rights, a cornerstone of conservative ideology, only if it doesn't get in his way of making a buck. And how would you feel if Bush threw his weight around to take YOUR house at a bargain price while you were trying to cut a better deal...with Six Flags for example? LOL
