Chicago Area Charitable Organizations

ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 2000--Ames
Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) announced today that it will present
Chicago-area charities with donations from its Ames Stores Foundation. Check
presentations, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, will take place as part of the
company's Grand Opening Celebrations on September 21, 2000.

"We believe very strongly in becoming active members of the communities we
serve," commented Joseph R. Ettore, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for
Ames. "Grand Opening morning is the perfect time to make a statement of
commitment to these communities."

Ames identified a variety of organizations whose programs directly benefit the
communities served by their new Ames stores. Among these are:

- The Near South Planning Board, serving Ward 2

- ABJ Community Services, serving Ward 5

- Austin People's Action Center, serving Ward 37

- Aunt Martha's Youth Services, serving Crest Hill

- Hope Community Services, serving Markham

- Outreach Ministries, serving Wheaton

- Chicago Association of Retarded Citizens, serving Ward 21

- Helping Hands in Bridgeview

Mr. Ettore will also present a $2,500 Foundation donation to the Illinois Carol
Fisher Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America at the 1450 North
Cicero Avenue Ames location. Benefiting Crohn's & Colitis patients throughout
Illinois, Ames' contribution will help fund research and development programs that
will provide care and comfort to children suffering from these diseases, and help
improve the quality of life for those affected through education and support.

worthy causes and organizations whose focus is consistent with the mission of the
Foundation. There are four major areas of commitment: Children's Health; Youth
