Qualcomm CEO Irwin Jacobs on South Korea's Market: Comment

Irvine, California, Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Irwin Jacobs comments on the South Korean government's ban on handset subsidies and the outlook for mobile-phone service companies in that country introducing faster Internet access based on San Diego-based Qualcomm's chips. He spoke Saturday at a technology reporting conference organized by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in Irvine, California.

On the ban on phone discounts:

``I expect to see the 1x transition (to new Qualcomm-based service) cause a big bump in (sales of) phones, and we're certainly working and supporting the manufacturers and talking with the government to try to see that move ahead as quickly as possible.''

``Further, I expect that the South Korean government will recognize that it has a huge export market on CDMA, great advantage because of that large export market. ... And part of that is built on the home market, and so if you suppress the home market and get away with that for some short time period, but it will begin to impact you longer term. And so I think the government will probably be examining its own policies over time.''

On which new CDMA standard Korea will adopt, Qualcomm's 1x/cdma2000 or rival WCDMA:

``With respect to the choice between WCDMA and cdma2000, the 1x technologies I've been discussing, in the new frequency bands, the government had just delayed, I think, by one month the submittals of proposals for those bands, and there's ongoing discussions as to what is best within Korea.

``From a Qualcomm point of view, whichever they select is fine -- they're both CDMA. And so we don't have a great concern other than we think that 1x will be available earlier, be more cost effective and therefore be financially a better investment there. And so we've been pressing that point, but whichever way it goes, they're both CDMA.''

OT, kinda

Win2k is a awesome OS even for home, I have been running since the day it came out and I have rebooted my CPU less than 10 times (in 4 months).

WinMe is fine, but if you can get a hold of Win2k, it will allow you to have a dual boot setup. Win98 and Win2k on same computer. (make sure you have 2 Hard Drives or set up a new partition)

If I can do that anyone can.

Eric, yep, I'll be upgrading RAM from 128MB real soon. My CPQ has a 3DFXVoodoo video adapter and don't really know how that stacks up.

Wish I could get my hands on W2K with the appropriate IDE drivers.

Hi Eric,

I would still like to know how to run "true" multitasking.

I am running Win98 with dual monitors. When my wife and I want to use the PC at the same time, I can put the email client on one monitor and the web browser on the other. But no matter what, only one window can be "active" at the same time. So when I want to scroll down SI messages she has to quit typing her email, until I finish and reactivate her window. What a pain. Does anyone know of an operating system and/or software app that allows/enables true multitasking?

Aloha Mike
