The Joys of Mexico
On of the great things about Mexico is you are unbelievably rich, at least as rich as Bill Gates. Certainly that is the way you are treated. Yes, you are unbelievably rich and therefore should tip massive amounts, further you should tip for everything.
You should tip for everything that is tipped for in the US. You should tip because someone gave you directions that are wrong. Because they yanked your bags out of your hands to carry them for you. And simply because they are tolerating your existence.
Children learn this at an early age in Mexico. They however expect to be tipped for saying 'Ola,' which means hello. You can really see the difference in up bringing among the children there. The well brought up will come up and say "Ola, money for me?" While the poorly reared will say "Ola, donde esta me dinero?"
It all makes for a quaint homey atmosphere. The humidity that hits you like a massive wet fist when you leave air conditioning, the heat that hits 100+ during the day but settles down into the mid 90's for a cozy night. [Not that anyone sane would go out into that night with the howling horde of mosquitoes waiting for you.]
It all gives me a nostalgic feeling, a kind of a twisting in the belly when I think of Mexico, (and when I don't think of Mexico). I am hoping the antibiotics get rid of it.
