As long as we've lost the thread to politics, I might as well throw in my 2 cents. I agree with your assessment of the problems, I don't agree with your assessment of the solution.

Great minds have managed to go from 33 MHz to 1 GHz+ chips in about 5 years. It would seem that if you funneled the same talent into transporting people, by "public transportation", with less energy use, you could probably make great progress. The problem is that we've delegated this to government, without a profit motive.

We need to deregulate and privatize public transportation. I'm not a conservative, if we need to subsidize it to get it off the ground, that's OK. But put in private hands that have the ability to make a profit, they will find ways to make "public transportation" a compelling value.
