Re: "Wouldn't you agree it's safe to say Sun has some "issues" to work out with the SMP configurations based off the release of the chip, but no SMP for 6 months?"

Yes, you're right.

Chick - Re: "Regardless, that wasn't my point. My point was Sun is releasing the Ultra Sparc III in a week, but won't have anything more than a SINGLE processor system for 6 months."

And it will only run at 750 MHz - making Intel's ITanium look very, very competitive assuming it is launched at 733 MHz.

"Sun's release of the Cheetah chip, a 64-bit RISC processor clocked at 750MHz, should help reassert its dominance in the Unix server market, observers said. "

Chic, >Wouldn't you agree it's safe to say Sun has some "issues" to work out with the SMP configurations based off the release of the chip, but no SMP for 6 months?

You may be jumping to conclusions:

1. Sun has been shipping 64 way, maybe up to 128 way SMP on USII based machines for 3 years or so. You'd thing they'd have a handle on SMP by now. Well, DUH!

2. Sun has said they are shipping all they can of current product. What's the rush?

Second argument much less germane than the first.

But, what the hell, let some hyenas go after Sun for awhile. Maybe you can get Dan1/3 to join you?

Sorry to include you with the hyenas, Chic. ;-)
