Don, some followup points to go with your post.

1. HDTV backward compatibility will likely be handled by something quite similar to current satellite TV / digital cable boxes. Is rdram present in those devices now? There are a lot of them out there, and they're not particularly expensive.

2. For actual HDTV sets, the obvious technology base that comes to mind is current PC graphics cards. Is RDRAM going to make a reappearance there?

3. Somewhat related, I think the PC market is actually bigger than the TV market now in unit sales, or at least it's close. I think so-called "convergance" is overhyped too, but PC technology is sufficiently mass market that the technology feedback /transfer is likely to go in the PC-> HDTV direction.

Cheers, Dan.

Don you may be right. I don't know. However, the fact remains that HDTV is here whether you want it or not. I know several people that are looking into HDTV. There are a number of boxes being shown on the net with great price differences, obviously due to different box features. I can hear the same words you posted not to vary long ago when computers made their entry. I'm still waiting for a reply on the post below.

Don,
HDTV is still thousands of dollars away per unit cost

Head on over to your nearest Best Buy. Same size RP HDTV sets vs. conventional RP ones are within a few hundred of each other now. They've come down by about 50% since only 5 months ago. I know cause I'm in the market for one and I've looked at them. I'm looking to get one of the new 50" Plasma displays though not the RP type. Yes, those are more expensive but it has nothing to do with HDTV. It's just a new type of technology.

How many people do you know, that have HDTV???

an investor will ask how many people do you know who WILL own HDTV and a digital settop box and a new generation DVD?

tech investing requires a forward look not a backward glance.

Don,
And one more thing. Dish network is now selling a HDTV ready satellite receiver for something like $499. That completes your HDTV setup.
