There are a lot of things that have to be just right

True enough if you believe that life always has had similar needs to the ones it has now.

The first life here may have actually clung to volcanic vents - hot enough to fry flesh. On the order of 150 degC or hotter! Many biochemical processes tend to optimize around 20-30 degC. So, was the change in planetary temperature "wanted" by life? Did life cool the planet down so biochemistry worked better? Or warm it up when it got too cool? I'm thinking the answer might be "yes".

Our belief that ET follows our evolutionary path may be a false premise. Provided a communication path can be developed, intelligence can follow. Is technology a necessary component of evolution or sentience? I doubt it. But I'm certain that communication is a component. Without communication, nothing can be learned or remembered.

I'm sure God would have a big fat headache and find those problems insurmountable

When the ebbing tide retreats
along the rock shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society

A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools,
They soon forget about the sea...
