Will their mediocre performance be sufficient for the masses in China and India?> My take is when there is ever an Internet appiance that can replace PC, it'll actually be a PC in its second coming. In other words, it'll still have procssing, memory, logic and various I/O in silicon chips. It will be an evolution rather than revolution. Often people who are talking about new internet gooies forget that most of those devices are just extension/compliment to PCs in terms of information processing and communication. And I never buy the arguement that all home or personal internet/info appliances are dumb clients that have to rely on the fat servers located in their service provider. People in the netowrking world already know that the new age communication demands that intelligence is concerntrated at the network edge as much as possible. PCs today are just in its primary utility form. It will evole into a hybrid center of home/personal communication and info processing. If more people are interested in this topic, I may present some of my examples later, such as evolution of PCS and home automation. So my conclusion is that PC in essence will not be obsolete in my lifetime. With regard to acceptance in China, today's 800MHZ Athlon/Duron are good enough for a while. A positive wildcard in China is that one day there is a decent PC software for voice recognition in Chinese, I can't imagine what demand of high speed CPUs would be. <2) What will be the effect of the X-Box? Do you see the danger that almost every game developer will abandon the PC and develop for the X-Box exclusively, therefore eliminating the need to upgrade the PC for many people?> My take on X-Box today is that X-Box is Microsoft's grand coax to keep SONY out of its home turf. I don't believe Microsoft will fight a bloody war with SONY in game console business. And I don't think Microsoft can remotely justify its market cap by being a dominant(???) game software vendor. Secondly, even if X-Box becomes a decent game console with internet connection, it will only have a proprietary interface with limited processing capabilities. Remember Compag and Microsoft jointly introduced an internet appliance last month? It can only be connected to MSN and it still costs more that $300. It's a joke and a PRELUDE. I can't imagine a household wife will use X-Box to run her Quiken. My reasoning is that SONY will never be a real threat to MSFT's home computing turf. And MSFT will never be a real threat to SONY's game console turf. panic
