Do you mean the years when we won the cold war, and virtually removed the fear of a nuclear holocaust?

Besides, we all really know Tip O'neil and the rest of the Democrats didn't give a hoot about balancing the budget during the eighties. Did Tip O'neil, or any Democrat, once go on T.V. or radio and say to the American people "I don't think we can afford all these programs, we need to cut the budget"? Of course they didn't. They never saw a program that didn't need expanding, or a tax that shouldn't be raised.

Thank God Ronald Reagan lowered the tax rate from over 70% to below 40% and freed the economic machine known as America. And while lowering the rate, proved to simple minded Keynesian economists that lower rates can lead to increased tax revenues. It was a bold idea which worked, and broke American businesses free from the malaise of central planning solutions of Democrats.

Central Planning doesn't work. It feels wonderful that everyone should get things for free. As Robert and a few other Democratic posters here have stated. But in the real world, nothing is free. A cost here is part of an integrated system where someone else bears the burden. Giving prescription drugs to every person over the age of 55 will be born by others. It may sound good, this free concept. But in reality, central planning leads to economic morbidity, stagnation and higher costs to everyone.

As a nation we need to look beyond the platitudes of feel good solutions such as free prescription drugs and challenge the assumptions around which those rhetorical phrases have been uttered. We need to be intelligent enough to ask questions such as. Is it really free? If not who will pay the price? Can they afford a higher tax to pay for it? What other causal effects may occur? Has this model led to success in the past? And lastly, Am I just thinking selfishly about my last remaining years on the planet, do I really care about America's long term success as a nation?

I believe, if a Democrat truly answered those questions with an objective open mind, there is absolutely no way they would believe giving away drugs for free to anyone over the age of 55 prescription drugs would be a wise move.
