We have some mass transit etc and in Europe they
even have a good rail system but people still are
using their own cars! and that is a lot more
duplication of resources than a few chips.

Just look at all the cars parked around factories,
shopping malls, office bldgs etc. or on the five
mile tie ups on rte I95 and the Long Island expressway!

A rational society might well adopt a program of
non-duplication of equipment. But I have noticed too
many boats sitting idle at marinas, too many
cars parked for days on end in the streets of
many cities. These are big ticket items compared
with CDs or whatever we replace them with.
And with several TVs, radios, and record players
in many households it will take a lot of bandwith
plus lot of active on-line storage to cover all the
possibilities that people will want when they want
them!
Also will people be willing to pay for so many
more choices than they can ever use, and if not
will we then have to limit our choices to only
the most popular items and thus homogenizing our
culture in the same way that fast food chains
are attacking our taste buds?
