Intersil's PRISM II Wireless Networking Chip Set on Board Alcatel's New Speedtouch ADSL-to-Wireless Home Gateway

IRVING, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2000--

Product to be Showcased At Intersil's Booth This Week At

Networld+Interop 2000

Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq:ISIL), the world's leading provider of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), announced today that Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) is showcasing its new SpeedTouch(TM) Wireless ADSL-to-wireless product for home wireless networking at Intersil's booth this week at the Networld+Interop 2000 in Atlanta, Ga.

"Alcatel's new SpeedTouch marks the first introduction of an IEEE 802.11 High Rate based product specifically designed for distributing broadband content wirelessly throughout homes via a residential gateway," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager for PRISM(TM) Wireless Products at Intersil. "This cutting-edge device is designed to serve as the central point of entry for broadband content into the home."

SpeedTouch offers high speed Internet access via an Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) phone line and features wireless distribution of services to any computer, communications, entertainment or information appliances throughout the home.

Earlier this week, Intersil's PRISM Wireless Products launched a new distinctive product line dedicated to developing complete silicon design solutions for home wireless networking products. Intersil's Home and PC Wireless Products line will leverage the intellectual property of its industry-leading PRISM WLAN technology to develop reference designs specifically for low-cost, easy-to-use wireless networking products including home gateways and embedded silicon designs for handheld, battery operated appliances. Adoption of PRISM(R) WLAN Technology

Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over fifty companies have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. In a May 2000 report, the Cahners In-Stat Group called Intersil "the dominant force in the WLAN chip set marketplace with their PRISM chipsets holding the majority of market share." PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE's 802.11b global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi(TM) brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11b-based systems. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from industry-leading companies including Alcatel, Cisco, Nokia, Siemens, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, Nortel, Samsung, SpectraLink, Symbol Technologies and Zoom.
