Most states have thresholds of case value above which arbitration is not mandatory. This case would certainly have a value greater than any reasonable threshold. This was most likely a mutually agreed upon arbitration.

They may well have been strongly encouraged by a Judge, or even required (depending on state law).

I would consider this a victory for Hyundai under most circumstances (since the longer no royalties are paid to Rambus, the better for Hyundai and the rest of the anti-rambus group) but given the multiple legal fronts where Rambus is presently battling, it may be even better for Rambus - there is a limit to the number of very expensive, extremely high stakes cases Rambus can support at one time.
